Getting started
Open Tableau Desktop
Once you have downloaded the TREX
file, open Tableau Desktop and build a visualization. Once you have created your initial dashboard, drag the Geographic Analytics Extension into your dashboard.
Grant permissions
You will be prompted with a request that grants the extension full data
permissions. This is what allows the extension to query the data contained in your workbook.
There is no communication between your Tableau environment and Mapbox, except to render map tiles. Mapbox has no knowledge of the data being queried or your interactions with Tableau.
Create your first visualization
Once you click Allow
the map should initialize instantly, and you will be presented with a cluster visualization.
The Geographic Analytics Extension automatically binds to the first sheet on the dashboard and searches for the Latitude and Longitude columns present in that worksheet's data connection. For the extension to function, your columns must be named Latitude
and Longitude
within Tableau Desktop.
As with all Tableau extensions, the Geographic Analytics Extension is limited to the first 10,000 rows, so there is a chance you may see a Too much data error
. Don't be alarmed, this is the extension working as intended. Your visualization will still render, but each interaction will throw the Too much data
error. To resolve, select a smaller subset of your data OR filter it upstream via your data source.
