# Configure the Basemap in Mapbox Studio

This tutorial walks through customization of the Mapbox Standard basemap when creating a new style in Mapbox Studio. The [basemap](https://docs.mapbox.com/help/ja/help/glossary/basemap) exposes several configuration properties which can be customized to suit your needs including the color of place labels, land uses, water, and atmosphere.

By the end, you'll have adjusted the colors of basemap the to fit the needs of your application or webpage.

> **Note: Starting completely from scratch**
>
> This tutorial covers customization of the Mapbox Standard basemap, which exposes only a few customizable layers. If you would like to build a style from scratch and fave full control over individual layers, follow the [Create a custom map style tutorial](https://docs.mapbox.com/help/ja/tutorials/create-a-custom-style/) instead.

## Prerequisites

**Mapbox account**: [Sign up](https://account.mapbox.com/auth/signup/) for free or [log in](https://console.mapbox.com/) if you already have an account.

## Create a new style

You will start by creating a new style using Mapbox Standard as the basemap. This will allow you to get a style up and running quickly while giving you some customization options, without overwhelming you with the customization that comes from a completely custom style.

To see this in action, you can view the **Mapbox Standard Style Playground**:

> **Related content (playground): [Mapbox Standard Style Playground](https://docs.mapbox.com/playground/standard-style/)**
>
> Experiment with these configuration options in our interactive playground. You can change the lighting conditions, toggle features, and set other configuration options to see how they affect the map's appearance.

To create a style based on the Mapbox Standard basemap, you will use the Style Editor and walkthrough the steps below:

1. Log in to your Mapbox account and go to the [Styles page](https://console.mapbox.com/studio/).
2. Click the **New style** button.
3. Select your basemap.
    - For this tutorial, set basemap to **Standard**.
4. Adjust the template settings
    - Now that you have selected a basemap, you can adjust some of its default settings, using the set up template.
    - You can select your lighting and color preferences.
    - For this tutorial, select *Faded* for the **color themes** and **Dusk** for **Light presets**.
5. Click **Customize** and your new Style will open in Mapbox Studio.

## Adjusting the basemap presets

Like you did when creating the style, you can adjust your basemap presets in Mapbox Studio. Down below you will review each section of the presets:

1. Click on **Mapbox Standard** in the bottom left corner, under **Imports**.
2. In the menu that appears, look under the **basemap** section.
    - Here you can see the settings you changed in the creation template and make adjustments if you change your mind.
3. Under the first drop down, where it says standard, you can choose between two base styles.
    - Standard is a vector based style, that uses a clean color scheme to show you the world.
    - Satellite is a raster based style, that pulls real world satellite images to showcase the globe, and place them on the map, providing different pictures for different zoom levels. you can choose between
4. Under Color theme, you can select a color theme to apply to the map, choosing between **Default**, **Faded** and **Monochrome** to apply to the map.
    - You can also apply a custom color theme by adding a Look Up Table to mapbox studio. To learn more about this, see the [Use a Look-up Table(LUT) to create a custom color theme with Mapbox Standard](https://docs.mapbox.com/help/ja/help/tutorials/create-a-custom-color-theme/) tutorial.
5. Under Light preset, you can select a light preset to apply to the map, based on the time of day.

For now, leave these settings as they are and now that you have reviewed the basemap presets, you can begin to color more specific aspects of your map.

## Color labels, water and land

In Mapbox Studio, you can make adjustments to the colors of individual components of your map. Here you will walk through coloring some of these aspects:

1. Go to the **Places & Boundaries** section.
    - Here you can adjust the color of the place labels on your map, as well as the color of the boundaries separating countries, states, cities, etc.
2. Change the place labels color to `#420359`.
    - Click the color swatch next to **Place labels color**
    - Switch the dropdown from `HSL` to `HEX`.
    - Paste `#420359` into the input field.
3. Next, scroll down to the **Land & Water** section.
    - Here you can adjust the color of the land and water around the map.
4. Change the Greenspace color to `#4f13c9`.
5. Change the Water color to `#cf90f9`.

## Color road and transit networks

Now that you've colored the labels, land, and water, you can move on to coloring the road and transit networks on your map.

1. Scroll down to **Road & Transit network**.
    - Here you can change the outlines of your road labels, and differentiate the color of roads based on type, for example a motorway vs. a pedestrian path.
    - To view these changes, make sure to zoom in close on your map.
2. Toggle off **Road labels** and **Transit labels**, to reduce the noise on your map.
3. Change **Motorway colors** to `#f4e6fa`
4. Change **Trunk road Colors** to `#e7bef9`
5. Change **Other road colors** to `#d697f2`

Now you can look around your map to see your changes in action.

## Publish your changes

When you have finished editing the colors of your map style, you can publish your changes which allows you to integrate your style with webpages or mobile applications.

1. Click the **Publish** button in the top right side of the screen to open the publishing menu.
    - When you click the publish button, a window will display the original style (or the previous version) and current version containing the edits you made in a side by side comparison.
2. If you're happy with the edits you made, click **Publish** button at the bottom of the window.
3. Click the **Publish** button.
4. If you'd like to use this style with Mapbox GL JS, the Mobile SDKs, etc, click the **Share** button in the top toolbar to see all the share options.
    - Your style will now be available to share from a variety of tools and applications.

Your browser doesn't support HTML5 video. Open [link to the video](https://docs.mapbox.com/help/ja/help/ja/assets/medias/tutorials--configure-basemap-with-studio--publish-style-20ac53c04417e87ed2af010c41fe988e.mp4).

Your style will now be available to share from a variety of tools and applications, by going to clicking **Share** in the top right corner of Mapbox Studio, and grabbing the style URL.

You can use this URL in your mobile apps and websites to display your style on a Mapbox map. The style URL is structured like so:

```
mapbox://styles/{username}/{styleid}
```

Refer to the guides below to learn how to set up an interactive map with your new style, based on your platform of choice:
