Release notes

What changed in each release of the Mapbox CLI, newest first. The CHANGELOG.md in the mapbox/mapbox-cli repository has the full entry for every change. To update, run the install script again, or brew upgrade mapbox if you installed with Homebrew.

1.1.1​

October 22, 2026

  • Update notices now work. Builds 0.3.0 through 1.1.0 shipped with the update check turned off, so they never said a newer version existed. From 1.1.1, mapbox prints a notice on stderr, at most once a day and only at a terminal. MAPBOX_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1 or mapbox config set update-check off turns it off. See Update notices.
  • The installer's MCP question now appears at once, instead of after a silent check of 3 to 15 seconds (#112).

1.1.0​

  • mapbox workflow (beta): install and run workflows, named multi-step recipes of mapbox commands and scripts. copy-style, which copies a style between accounts with its fonts and icons, is the first published workflow (#67).

mapbox workflow is outside the CLI's compatibility promise: it may change or be removed in any release.

1.0.0​

The first stable release. From 1.0.0, versions follow semantic versioning.

Breaking changes​

  • Removed --exclude-fields from mapbox search forward and mapbox search category. It had no effect for most accounts (#79).
  • Removed --eta-type, --navigation-profile, and --origin from mapbox search category. The endpoint returns no ETA, so they had no effect. search forward keeps them (#80).

New commands​

History, logs, and telemetry​

  • Command history with mapbox history, on by default and stored only on your machine (#56, #57).
  • Diagnostic logs, off by default: mapbox config set log on (#58).
  • One telemetry event per run, sent in the background. It never touches stdout, the exit code, or how long the command takes (#46). See Privacy for what it contains.
  • mapbox config set telemetry off turns telemetry off in every shell; MAPBOX_CLI_NO_TELEMETRY=1 still works for one shell (#47).
  • The CLI's own token, which sends telemetry and report, now comes from cli.mapbox.com instead of from the binary itself, so Mapbox can rotate it without a release (#99).
  • Telemetry goes out with the CLI's own token only, never yours (#104).

Installation​

  • Homebrew: brew install mapbox/tap/mapbox (#62).
  • A native build for Windows on Arm (#37).
  • The install script offers to set up the Mapbox skill for your coding agent (#61, #68), and to add the Mapbox MCP servers to the coding agents it finds (#71).
  • install.sh adds its install directory to your PATH with one line in your shell profile (MAPBOX_NO_MODIFY_PATH=1 opts out). Its output is shorter and ends with what to run next, and each run writes a log to ~/.local/state/mapbox-cli/install.log (#71).
  • An agent setup prompt at https://cli.mapbox.com/agent-setup/prompt.md: give the URL to any coding agent and it installs the CLI, the skills, and the MCP servers (#72).

Help and output​

  • Reworked help: the top-level help groups commands by task, command help is more compact, and it ends with a "Learn more" section and a --schema hint for coding agents (#83, #86, #91).
  • A version banner and color at the terminal (#66).
  • Colors that read well on light and dark themes, a new --no-color flag, and FORCE_COLOR=1 to keep color in a pipe (#83).
  • mapbox usage draws a chart (#83).
  • A parameter's help line no longer stops at the first dot inside an ID, a number, or an abbreviation (#83).
  • A command that returns a file, such as styles download, static get-image, or a tile, confirms it on stderr at a terminal, for example Wrote application/zip (988165 bytes). (#70).
  • mapbox config list aligns its keys in text output, like other key-value lists (#66).

Other improvements​

  • A 403 error now names the missing scope and how to add it (#70).
  • MAPBOX_CLI_EXTRA_QUERY passes API parameters that have no flag (#34).
  • tilesets query prints a numbered list under -o text again (#82).
  • generate-skills, agent-skills install, and agent-skills update fail with a stable no_agent_detected error code when they find no coding agent (#68).
  • Security fixes: rustls 0.23.46 for RUSTSEC-2026-0346 to 0349 (#97), and rustls-webpki and webpki-roots past RUSTSEC-2026-0381 and 0382 (#106).
