Three steps to sign up
- Fill in your account details on the sign-up page and select Start without a credit card.
- Open the confirmation email from
no-reply@mapbox.comand verify your email. This automatically guides you to the Mapbox Console. - Copy the trial token and start building.

Sign up with Mapbox MCP server connection
When you connect an AI assistant to a hosted Mapbox MCP server, such as the DevKit MCP Server, your browser opens a Mapbox sign-in page as part of the OAuth flow. If you do not have an account yet, choose Start without a card to get trial access to Mapbox services.

Limits
When no payment method has been added, developers can test, build prototypes, and test Mapbox services within set limits, which are subject to change.

You can view your usage and limits in the Mapbox Console at any time. During the trial period, the applied rate limits are also lower before a payment method is added.
Mapbox services that are not accessible during the trial period include Mapbox specialty data products for Boundaries, Traffic, and Movement, as well as the Raster Tiles API and Permanent Geocoding. Adding a payment method unlocks the Raster Tiles API and Permanent Geocoding. You can contact sales at any time to gain access to the specialty data products.
If you don't have a payment method on file and hit a usage limit or reach the end of the trial, you will get a Console alert and an email notification. Adding a payment method removes the usage limits, raises rate limits, and ensures continued access to Mapbox services.
When a payment method is added, the rate limits are raised to match the standard rate limits for each Mapbox API.
Adding a payment method
You can add a payment method either directly during sign-up or later in the Mapbox Console. Adding a payment method lifts usage limits and enables new tokens to be generated. Your account data, including your username, styles, and tilesets, remains intact.
To add a payment method after signing up without one:
- Log in and click Add payment method in the Welcome to Mapbox banner at the top of the page.
- Provide the payment method information.
- Choose what to do with your trial token.
- Rotate token (Recommended) replaces the trial token with a new default public token. Requests made with the old token fail from that point on, so it cannot generate charges on your account.
- Keep token leaves the token unchanged so a running prototype keeps working. Choose this only if a prototype still depends on the token, and create a new token before you use Mapbox in production.
- Confirm your choice. Your Developer Console shows Account setup complete! and the usage limits no longer apply.
After these steps you have access to the generous Mapbox free tiers, and receive a monthly invoice for usage that exceeds them. You can create and manage access tokens and set up usage notifications to get email alerts when your monthly usage reaches thresholds you set. Go to the Usage notifications page in your account settings, choose a service, and enter a monthly usage threshold in that service's usage units (for example, requests or monthly active users). You can add multiple thresholds for each service.
Any application that still uses the token you used during the trial period can generate billable usage on your account. Review where the token is in use before you take a project to production.
Before you use Mapbox tokens in production, review the security recommendations and create a new token with the features you need.

I cannot create a new access token or delete my existing one
The trial period includes one access token, and you cannot create, rotate, or delete tokens. Provide a payment method to create and manage tokens.
I added a payment method. Do I need to update the token in my code?
If you chose Rotate token, yes. Copy the new default public token from your Access Tokens page and replace the old value in your project.
If you chose Keep token, the existing token continues to work. Before you use Mapbox in production, create a new public token with URL restrictions and replace the trial token in your project.
